THE CINQUE TERRE
The Cinque Terre are five small villages located along the coastline of Liguria, in the stretch between Riomaggiore and Punta Mesco. The villages of the Cinque Terre: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso, partly overlooking the sea, are characterized by colourful houses and terraces built with fatigue to man through walls, intended for the cultivation of olives and grapes. From the latter a sweet wine that is characterized by its peculiarity: the Sciacchetrà.
You will see a unique landscape and famous for its beauty that has preserved its characteristics due to its isolation. Until the years ' 60, period of construction of the roadway, the countries were connected only by narrow mule tracks or accessible from the railway or by sea. An ancient system of trails overlooking the sea which is still usable, represents for passionate hikers an alternative way to visit the villages. The most famous is the way of love, a walkway overlooking the sea that connects Riomaggiore to Manarola, currently closed to the public following a landslide.
In 1997 the Cinque Terre have been included in the Unesco World Heritage site and National Park are both marine protected Area.
Monterosso: is a famous seaside resort, is the largest of the five villages and is mainly developed in the plan. Monterosso is divided into two parts, Aurora tower with the colle dei Cappuccini and the Castle are the waters between the new Fegina, characterized by a nice promenade and wide beaches that go up to the Giant statue of the God Neptune dating back to 1910 and the old part where you will find the traditional country style. You can visit the 13th century Church of San Giovanni Battista and the oratory. Around the country there are many olive groves and citrus trees.
Vernazza: is a small fishing village and is one of the most characteristic of the Cinque Terre. Vernazza was founded around 1000 ad and was ruled by the Republic of Genoa. You can visit the medieval castle Belforte, built in the middle of 1500, to protect the village from pirates attack. In Vernazza there is a small romantic harbour and a beautiful church which overlooks the sea.
Corniglia: is a small village that grew on a Hill 100 m above the sea. Does not have a direct access to the sea. The village is connected to the railway station by a trail of 377 steps known as Lardarina. Corniglia is connected to other villages of the Cinque Terre from well maintained trails. The village is surrounded by vineyards and terraces. It is possible to visit the eighteenth-century piazza Taragio with his Oratorio Saint Catherine. The Church of San Pietro, built in 1334, is a perfect example of Gothic Ligurian style.
Manarola: is built on a high rock 70 metres above sea level, and is one of the most romantic countries in the Cinque Terre. Arriving by sea is a very small one stop Marina where previously pulled boats wait on the shore. Glancing you see the picturesque multicolored colored houses overlooking the sea. In Manarola there is no real Beach, the water is deep and that is why you can enjoy the best bathrooms and for fans of the genre can delight to dive from the high rocks. The village is spread slightly uphill, with many characteristic steep alleys known as carrugi, leading to the sea. You can visit the Church of San Lorenzo, built in Romanesque style and dating from 1338. The façade, in local sandstone, is characterized by a precious Carrara marble rose window of 1375.
During the Christmas season, from 8 December until the end of January you can see the largest lighted Nativity scene in the world. The Hill is illuminated by more than 200 handmade figures and about 12,000 bulbs.
Manarola with Riomaggiore is connected through the Via dell'Amore (still closed due to a landslide), famous and only trail of lovers, known for its romantic atmosphere and beautiful views.
Riomaggiore: the last of the five countries, origins back to the 8th century, when the inhabitants of the Valley of Vara, seeking a milder climate, moved towards the coast. In Riomaggiore you can visit the Church of Saint John the Baptist, whose construction began in 1340, the Sant' Antonio Church in the historic center of Riomaggiore that dates back to the 18th century and the castle of 1260.
